Shop Small, Shop Handmade, Shop Local

It’s Small Business Saturday on November 29th.   Founded by American Express in 2010 as a way to help businesses get more customers, this single day has grown into a powerful movement!

I believe in supporting small business all year round but it is nice to have an official designated day.

According to research by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business, consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday in 2013 spent $5.7 billion with independent merchants - a 4% increase over the previous year!  (source:  sba.gov)

Why Shop Small?

The Multiplier Effect

Shopping at a small business means that every dollar spent at an independently owned business stays in the community and offers greater economic value by creating jobs and more localized spending.

Charitable Giving

Studies have shown that a community that shops local also gives to and supports community charitable events.  Communities with many locally owned businesses create a walkable environment that attracts tourists further stimulating the local economy.

Maintains Community Character

Independently owned businesses offer a distinct character that major chains cannot.  Local businesses bring their local economy greater revenue then national chains.  70% of sales made at a national chain store leave the community and go back to national headquarters.  Whereas with a local business, the opposite is true – the revenue stays local and is recycled back into the community.
