Around the Corner.

Highlights of the High Line!

Have you been to the High Line yet?  Well, you should go.  Recommended by Karen Seiger of Markets in NYC (in my last post covering Morningside Heights), the High Line is quite the treat.  And it's FREE to check out.  Yup, this elevated Manhattan public park spans nearly 20 blocks from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street (between 10th & 11th Avenues), and it's full of plant life and history.

Did you know that the High Line was built in the 1930s and no trains have run on it since the 1980s?  Read more info here!

Access points can be found at:
Gansevoort Street
14th Street (elevator access)
16th Street (elevator access)
18th Street
20th Street

What's around your corner?  In the comments section, please suggest something neat to do/see in the Manhattan Tri-State Area that's either free or on-the-cheap, and it just may be the next place I visit.

Thanks for coming along!

Are you one of our Holiday Handmade Cavalcade Raffle Winners?

What an amazing year it has been! The members of The {NewNew} would like to thank you for supporting handmade artists in Metro New York. Given the state of the economy, your contribution to local indie designers means a lot more than you can imagine.
We are especially grateful to those who stopped by our tents at various events around town. We're also extremely appreciative to all those who turned up at our Second Annual Holiday Handmade Cavalcade, and were delighted that so many stopped by, (even in the pouring rain)! If you have pictures of the event, we'd love to see it! Send it over to our email at handmadecavalcade@gmail.com.

And if you entered our holiday raffle, check out the video results here to see if you're one of the five lucky winners!

For all who are not done with their shopping list, there is still time to visit some of our shops at the following events this weekend. The Brooklyn Lyceum will be host to a holiday craft market on Saturday and Sunday, featuring Lu Crafts, Wai Sze Designs, New York Clocks, a Studio by the Sea, Wabisabi Brooklyn. Wabisabi Brooklyn will also be at the Brooklyn Indie Market on Sunday. And May Luk Ceramics will be at The Market at The Old American Can Factory, along with a host of curated artisan goods.

Finally, we'd like to thank all our sponsors for making the Second Annual Holiday Handmade Cavalcade such a success. Their support enabled us to put on such a wonderful holiday show!

So, stay tuned for our events for the upcoming 2010 season. We will have even more fun and exciting shows in store for you.

We hope you have a happy and healthy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you at our events in the new year!

Best,
The {NewNew}

If I Had A Bell...

Remember this old song? It was a staple during my summer sleep-away-camp days:

"If I had a bell, I'd ring it in the morning, I'd ring it in the evening, All over this land..."

It reminds me of all the creative ways we handcraft-folk strive to let the world at large know what we're doing. Of course, we try to ring bells with our Etsy shops and our blogs, with the hope that the attention will lead to sales. But I think it's also fair to say that it's difficult to create in a vacuum.

Judging by a recent blog roundup from my fellow {NewNew} artisans, talking about how we do what we do, as well as what and who inspires us to keep creating is an important part of the process. The ongoing inspiration and the sense of satisfaction we get from knowing someone likes something we made -- uses it, wears it, cherishes it -- is, well, kinda awesome.

prismPOP @ My Coney clearly has a soft spot for Coney Island USA, but also blogs about her experience at the recent Renegade Craft Fair with her fellow {NewNew}ers and (ouch!) sunburnt knees.

pandawithcookie @ pandawithcookie.blogspot.com offers an inside look at preparations for her first craft show, Seventh Heaven, in Brooklyn.

fubabee @ Pretty Stationery for Beautiful Souls talks about what inspires her beautiful stationery, but also tackles the whole "wedding industrial complex" as part of an ongoing meditation on the value of handmade.

pulpsushi @ pulpsushi.typepad.com writes with verve (and lots of exclamation points!) about what inspires her in work and life.

dirtylovesclean @ DirtyLovesClean.blogspot.com invites readers to follow her soap-making adventures, which include the pros and cons of craft fairs, veggie "meat", and the creation of a boxed wine soap.

jantar @ Jantar Handcrafted Jewlery uses her blog like an inspiration board, full of pictures and stories behind the creation of her lovely jewelry, as well as detailed, easy-to-follow how-to's.

You'll find all of these blogs, and more, through the {NewNew} member shop links and banners on the left. Take a moment to follow the links and learn a little bit about what inspires some of your favorite artisans. Perhaps you'll be inspired too.
